Ministerial Statement of Expectations
In September 2022, Senator the Hon Katy Gallagher, Minister for Finance, Minister for Women, Minister for the Public Service issued a Statement of Expectations for the National Data Commissioner.
The Statement of Expectations outlines the Government's expectation of the Commissioner and their Office will strive for the continuous improvement in implementing the Data Availability and Transparency Act 2022 and the DATA Scheme.
These expectations included the continuous improvement as a regulator implementing the Act and DATA Scheme, building trust of Australian Government data sharing, and engagement and alignment with other Australian data and digital regulators.

National Data Commissioner’s Statement of Intent
In December 2022, the National Data Commissioner responded with a Statement of Intent detailing how the Commissioner and their Office will meet the Government’s expectations.
The Commissioner's objectives are to:
- support better availability and use of Australian Government data for public benefit – to deliver government services that put people and business at the centre, information government policies and programs, and support world leading research and development
- strengthen data handling and sharing across the Australian Public Service
- operate effectively and efficiently as a regulator, adviser, guide and educator, and
- deliver institutional arrangements and build trust and transparency in data sharing.
The National Data Commissioner and the ONDC will act in accordance with the principles set out in the Regulator Performance Guide July 2021.
